The accuracy of transvaginal sonography in prediction of etiology of abnormal uterine bleeding in perimenopausal women
Abstract
Objective: to evaluate the efficacy of ultrasonographic examination in comparison to histopathological examination as a reference in cases complaining of perimenopausal bleeding.
Study Design: Cross sectional study.
Participants & Methods: This study conducted at Kasr Al-Ainy Hospital of Cairo university. It conducted on women with perimenopausal bleeding were subjected to transvaginal ultrasonography to make provisional diagnosis followed by fractional curettage and histopathological examination. Data obtained from ultrasound were compared to pathology report.
Results: Irregular secretory changes were found in 8 cases, Proliferate changes were found in 10 cases and Simple hyperplasia in 17 cases. There were no cases of malignancy reported. Interestingly, only 5 cases by histopathology agreed with sonar as normal findings while 10 cases of simple hyperplasia were diagnosed as normal by ultrasound. There was insufficient accuracy of ultrasound in diagnosis as it missed the diagnosis in 25 cases
Conclusion: absence of abnormal data in the ultrasound does not exclude abnormal findings in the histopathological examination.
