Effectiveness of Intracutaneous Injection of Sterile Water in Presacral Region for Pain Relief during Labor in Comparison to Intramuscular Pethidine.
Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intracutaneous injection of sterile water into the presacral region during active phase of labourlabor in comparison to intramuscular injection of 50 mg of meperidine (pethidine) as a method for intrapartum analgesia.
Study Design: Randomized controlled trial.
Participants and Methods: Fifty low-risks labourlaboring primiparous were randomly allocated into one of two groups. Group I (n = 25), received sterile water while group II (n = 25) received meperidine analgesia. Pain scores were assessed at baseline, 10 minutes, 1, 2 and 3 hours later and the need for rescue additional analgesia was also recorded.
Results: Mean pain scores dropped significantly in both groups but there were lower among the sterile water group compared to the mepridine group at 10 minutes and 3 hours. There were no recorded systemic side effects in the sterile water group, on the contrary; all who received mepridine has experienced side effects.
Conclusions: Sterile water given intracutaneously seem to be an efficient and simple method for antagonizing parturition low back pain that can replace routine meperidine use, especially in hospital with low resources.
